Consider installing storage spaces such as cabinetry with modern craftsmanship or cubbies installed under furniture to keep the living space decluttered. A contemporary living room, for example, “might have fewer pieces in the room, but each of them have a more artistic or artisanal quality and high level of craftsmanship to them,” Sander says. In a modern home, the light fixtures are usually non-intrusive and high-end.

Contemporary interior design styling tips

Contemporary simply means to live, happen, or belong in the present time. This means that contemporary style is ever-evolving and, according to The Spruce, largely tied to trends as opposed to linked to a period in time. In fact, modern is often confused with contemporary as the latter does include elements from modernist styles. However, just like contemporary refers to the present, modern refers to a period that has already passed. For someone interested in incorporating contemporary interior design into their home, understanding the building blocks of the style is important. In the last six months, #coastalgranddaughter went from 15.2 million views on TikTok to 95.4 million (at the time of publication).

You can easily alternate between straight lines and curved edges to make your home feel more functional but cozy, all at once. While the style has a similar look to pared-down minimalist and Japandi interiors, the focus in organic modern interiors is more on bringing earthy colours and natural materials into the home, as seen in the 10 examples below. Since contemporary style interior design brings together two worlds, interior designers have the liberty to combine decorating ideas from various time periods and cultures. Modern contemporary interior design decrees that all manners of art deco and craftsmanship should have a purpose to either add functionality or aesthetic value to a contemporary home. Since the late 1900s, when post-modernism was introduced into the art world, people began to favor this eclectic form of home design ideas. These art forms combined classic craftsmanship with modern design for a refreshing take on cultural dogmas.

The Guava berry Emporium is the spot to taste and sample this locally made liquor. The Guava berry Emporium is located on Front Street in Phillipsburg in an old townhouse, you can’t miss the big liquor bottle at the entrance. Probably the most crowded beach during the cruise season is Maho Beach watching the planes land and take off, never gets old.

Getting from Princess Juliana International Airport to the St. Maarten Cruise Port

During the tasting, you’ll have the opportunity to sample different varieties of the liquor, with several fruit flavors. The Parotte Ville Bird Sanctuary is a fun, family-friendly attraction. The sanctuary’s knowledgeable staff provide informative talks and feeding sessions, offering insights into the behavior and conservation efforts for these beautiful creatures. Impressively, the elevated vantage point offers panoramic views of Great Bay and the Caribbean Sea. A tour will usually bring you to the French capital city of Marigot. Other major sights which are often included in the island tour are Fort Amsterdam, Baie Rouge, and Sunset Beach.

The walk is about 10 minutes, goes three fourths of a mile and is not difficult on a warm day. The water taxi stand at the cruise port is just a quick walk north of the docks. The price for an entire day is $7 per person at the time of this writing. The bustling Philipsburg provides a fusion of shopping, dining, and historical sites, all within a short distance from the cruise port. There are so many other sites, landmarks, attractions and activities to enjoy in St Lucia that cruise passengers visiting the island always find something exciting to do and see.

To start with, you will enjoy docking at St. Maarten as tendering is not necessary. Your ship will dock on the Dutch side of the island at Philipsburg, where all large vessels such as cruise ships dock. St Maarten is the only country in the world with a beachside capital, and this beach stretches along its full length. Like Philipsburg itself, Great Bay Beach is only a five to ten minute walk from the cruise port. No other cruise port along your itinerary will provide a beach so close, so you might as well want to grasp this opportunity! Along the beach goes Philipsburg’s boardwalk, making the beach easily walkable.

Most beach resorts have snorkeling gear for hire and rentals for water sports. You can also arrange shore excursions that include snorkeling, boat rides, or island hopping. This stunning stretch of white sand is about 1.5 miles long and features soft sand, calm, clear waters, and plenty of facilities.

Grab a tube and hold on as you slide through the forest careening and bending at every curve to get to the bottom. Enjoy the picturesque scenery of the vast blue waters, and the lush green countryside as you zoom your way down the mountain. This lift will take you on a relaxing and scenic ride up the mountain.

Sample popular Caribbean treats such as Johnny cakes, callaloo, conch, fish fritters, lobster, and more. The best place to experience the island’s best dishes is at Grand Case, Marigot on the French side. A visit to St. Maarten is not complete without tasting the island’s cuisine. This cuisine won’t disappoint either, influenced by French and Creole cooking, expect to enjoy a wide array of delicious, mouth-watering dishes.

Spend your day at Great Bay Beach enjoying the shallow calm crystal clear waters. And if you need a break, the best duty-free shopping in Philipsburg is just a stone’s throw away. Docking at the island is smooth, courtesy of the large pier that accommodates up to 7 ships. Don’t be alarmed, however, as you will rarely dock with 6 other ships. And even if it happens, the island has plenty of attractions which helps spread out the masses. There are also cabs to take you to different destinations if you prefer to discover the island.

Great Bay Beach is a beautiful beach that stretches 2 miles (3.22 km) long that looks like a postcard from every angle. It is very close to the cruise terminal and you can get there either by water taxi for $7 with a return ticket or pay $5 for a one way. Great Bay Beach isn’t the best beach in the Caribbean or even the best beach on St. Maarten. But it is one of the most convenient beaches in the Caribbean for cruise port visitors because it is within walking distance of the docks. They can rent umbrellas and chairs for a reasonable price and a lovely view of the bay.

Taxis available at the cruise port can take you there; the same applies when coming from the airport. Buses depart to and from the airport from Emmaplein, a ten minute walk from the port. A nice day trip is a jaunt from the Philipsburg cruise port over to Marigot, capital of the French side, or Grand Case.

What can you do to experience a fusion of Caribbean culture and Dutch history? I’ve compiled this guide to St. Maarten for anyone visiting the Caribbean island on a cruise. Additionally, you’ll get helpful tips on getting around the island to ensure a stress-free and enjoyable experience in port. Keep in mind that you need to get back to the cruise ship on time, so this might be best as a cruise line shore excursion or if you are in St. Maarten for a long port day. The largest casino on the island is Casino Royale, located in Maho village. A casino that is closer to the cruise ships is Rouge et Noir Casino SXM, located on Back Street in Philipsburg.

On the French side, there are cafés serving café au lait and pain au chocolat and sidewalk bistros offering chilled rosé and savory crepes. A variety of luxury shops and cosmopolitan boutiques beckon to sophisticated shoppers who love a good bargain—the entire island has no sales tax. So, when you cruise to St Maarten with Holland America Line Cruises be sure to bring your sense of adventure and prepare to make unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime. Conveniently located in Philipsburg are 12 casinos where you can try your luck at the slot machine, crap, blackjack, roulette, and many others. These European style casinos closely resemble those in Las Vegas but with a touch of the Caribbean atmosphere which brings a laid-back and relaxed atmosphere. Don’t just play in the cruise ship’s casino, mix things up in Phillipsburg.

Getting a taxi, rented vehicle or any other means of transportation is easy in St. Maarten. And best of all the taxi charges are standardized by the government. Just walk up to the transport booth at the end of the pier and choose from a number of choices availed to you. The island has gorgeous powdery sand beaches, charming European-style towns and green rolling hills in its backdrop.

You can also book a tour that will allow you to explore more of the island, including St. Martin. You can check the cruise line excursions as well as excursions with Viator, Shore Excursions Group and other local tour providers. Transportation options into the town of Philipsburg, local beaches and popular sights are conveniently located at the cruise terminal. Then the climax of it all comes when you enter the crystal clear waters of the ocean and start galloping around. This is a fun family bonding adventure that you will absolutely love. Most cruise lines offer this excursion but you can check out local tour operators such as Lucky Stables.

The Best 30 Things to Do in St Maarten on a Cruise Day in Port

st. maarten cruise port

It’s also easy to plan a hybrid city and beach day because Philipsburg’s popular shopping and restaurant area is close to the beach. The cities both boast different types of food, shopping and activities, making them two of the top things to do in St. Maarten/St. Each side of the island has a unique vibe and history that shaped it into the popular destination it is today. St. Martin is well-known for its beaches, shopping and fine dining establishments. In contrast, St. Maarten is celebrated for its more lighthearted vacation vibes of nightlife, stunning beaches and duty-free shopping. One of the more famous and controversial attractions is the Maho Bay beach next to Princess Juliana International Airport.

The bus system in St. Maarten is an efficient and cost-effective way for visitors to explore the island. Unlike the structured public transport systems found in many countries, St. Maarten’s buses are more informal. They are typically small vans rather than large buses and do not operate on a set schedule. However, they are frequent and cover most of the island, making them a reliable option for getting around.

St Maarten/St Martin Beaches

You can visit the main beach or take a 5-10minutes hike to the deserted side of the island for more beaches (note they might be clothing optional). This is the most convenient beach for a cruiser not wanting to wander far from the cruise terminal as it’s located just a short distance from the cruise port. To get around the island you will need a vehicle and luckily transport is readily available at the end of the short pier. There are water taxis, vehicles, trams, buses and even ATV’s at the transport stand. Visit Little Bay Beach if you’re looking for a beach that’s close to the cruise port, about 7-minute cab ride. This is a very nice beach, with soft sand, and gorgeous turquoise water.

Water taxi at St. Maarten cruise dock

The popular beach features stunning white sand, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and a vibrant beachfront promenade. Various water sports, such as snorkeling, parasailing, jet skiing, and paddleboarding, are also available. Diverse transportation options into Philipsburg or elsewhere from the piers is available upon command.

Orient Beach

Those who’d rather relax can visit one of the many beach bars for a tasty beverage. Great Bay Beach is another great beach option with its mile-long boardwalk, shopping, abundance of restaurants and stunning sand. One day cruise visits give plenty of opportunity to enjoy our unique key strengths like our famed culinary offer, excursions on land and sailing and water excursions. St Maarten / St Martin may be well known as a binational and vibrant destination, with 37 square miles it is also very compact.

It’s the perfect spot to relax and soak up the sun while enjoying views of cruise ships and the surrounding hills. Sint Maarten (Dutch side) and Saint Martin (French side) have much to offer cruise passengers with a day to spend on the island. Here are my top tips about shore excursions and tours you can arrange from the cruise pier. Although you can book them through your cruise line, many taxi drivers offer personal island tours. Maho Beach on Saint Maarten offers the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. Various water sports, like windsurfing and snorkeling, are available as well.

Beaches on St. Martin are worthy sites to explore, too, like Grand Case Beach with its private beach club called the Grand Case Beach Club and Cupecoy Bay Beach. The latter is set amongst limestone cliffs, possessing both incredible natural beauty and natural wind protection. At the top of the cliffs are shops and beach bars to entertain you when you’re bored of the beach. Are you transferring to or from the Cruise Port to Princess Juliana Airport ( SXM )?

However, you will have a fragrance to remember your time at St. Martin. The Flying Dutchman Zipline is an exhilarating, adrenaline-pumping excursion in St. Maarten. Billed as the world’s steepest zipline, the adventure includes a 1,050-foot drop on a securely harnessed chair. You get some of the most breathtaking 360° views of the Caribbean, including Anguilla, St. Eustatius, Saba, and St. Barts.

Hence, the island of St. Maarten is one of the world’s top cruise port destinations. Boat tours travel around the island and allow you to experience hidden coves, the best beaches, and some even visit nearby islands. Most catamaran tours include food and drinks and come at premium prices.

Nestled in the interior of the island, this eco-tourism site features hiking trails, zip-lining adventures, and a tranquil pool area. It's a perfect getaway for those seeking an escape into nature and is highly recommended for families and adventure seekers. Each of these beaches provides a different slice of St. Maarten’s beauty and character.

You can walk to the capital of St. Maarten, Philipsburg, which takes 15 to 20 minutes. On busy cruise days, walking to town lets you avoid the long lines at the water taxi pier or taxi rank. The Great Bay Beach is within walking distance of St. Maarten Cruise Pier.

Otherwise, walk the boardwalk, and pick a spot on the beach and relax for the day, swim, drink, or tan. There’s so many places to check out you can get dizzy with a choice. You will be dropped off and picked up at the pier here, you will know you have arrived when you see the map of Sint Maarten/Saint Martin mural on the ground. Located in Philipsburg this shopping mecca is popular for jewelry shops. If you’re looking for a particular piece of jewelry I’m sure you can find it here no doubt.

Additionally, the port has several booths for passenger screening, making disembarking exceedingly efficient. One single pier (545 m) accommodating 4 ships simultaneously was one pier too few. Opened in 2009, the Harbour Group of Companies upgraded the port by building a second pier. St. Maarten is now one of the few ports able to accommodate the world’s largest cruise ships – the Genesis-class vessels. You can choose between a full-day and half-day trip, based on your wishes and personal preferences.

Showing artifacts and curved items from the Arawaks and old photographs and important memorabilia of the colonial governments of the island. For just $1 per adult and free for children and students, St. Maarten museum is a must visit. The coral reef a few yards from the beach acts as a barrier that protects the pools from rough surf making it perfect for swimming, snorkeling, floating or just wading in.

This pretty place has awesome snorkeling and it’s a nice island getaway with a picturesque tropical aura. Afterward, enjoy a hearty lunch on the beach and sunbathe awhile before you are whisked back to the main island. The lookout platform has information boards that are pretty helpful in capturing the protected nature reserve’s essence.

They are Philipsburg on the southern coast and Simpson Bay on the southwest coast because they have the cruise port and the airport. Anyone who walks around the Philipsburg waterfront won’t find much else to see other than the beach, boardwalk, shops and restaurants. Very energetic walkers can hike 2.5 miles to the other side of the bay to Little Bay Beach and the small ruins of Fort Amsterdam.

2024 Toyota Land Cruiser First Drive Review: Brief taste shows promise, but 1958 questionable

toyota land cruise

In our brief exposure on the road, it won’t come near those numbers, but it’ll improve. So, would I prefer the full open-air feeling of something like the Jeep Wrangler or Ford Bronco? Or, better yet, would I prefer the comfort of the Jeep Grand Cherokee or Wagoneer, not to mention the refinement of other rivals from Land Rover? As far as I’m concerned, the Land Cruiser 1958 occupies a singular sweet spot of comfort and off-road prowess. Toyota restricted our testing to off-road courses carved into the San Ysidro Mountains outside of San Diego, so I won’t comment on the Land Cruiser’s highway handling. Courses were split into high- and low-speed trials, though you likely won’t go too fast in the new Land Cruiser while four wheelin'.

The car that symbolizes Toyota's history of delivering safety and security to people for over 70 years

toyota land cruise

The brick-like shape, upright windshield, and rectangular mirrors induce the expected wind noise at speed, but it’s not as loud as those competitors. That comes down to the fact the Land Cruiser’s roof and doors can’t come off. For details on vehicle specifications, standard features and available equipment in your area, contact your Toyota dealer. A vehicle with particular equipment may not be available at the dealership. We’ll have to wait to compare the Land Cruiser and the new 4Runner, even if Toyota says no one will cross-shop the two.

The Power of Choice

As mentioned above, interior quality differs wildly between the 1958 and upper “Land Cruiser” trim (the First Edition is the same as the latter). The 1958’s cloth is quite nice with a certain retro quality to its look and feel, but all the hard plastic is rough – literally and figuratively. You also get an 8-inch touchscreen and a much smaller instrument display than the vibrant, multi-view 12.3-inch unit in the other trims.

Vehicle Style

Beige or black leather upholstery is standard along with a 14 speaker JBL sound system. The only wheel choice is 18 in (460 mm) allowing a lot of sidewall so the vehicle can be driven off-road without modification though a more aggressive tread pattern is advised for deep mud. The 250 Series inherits the Land Cruiser mission of supporting the lives and livelihoods of people everywhere, while pursuing the reliability, durability, and off-road performance that is the DNA of the Land Cruiser. In line with Toyota's carbon neutrality initiatives that take a diverse multi-pathway approach, it also comes with various powertrains, including the first hybrid system for a Land Cruiser. These achieve powerful driving performance and environmental performance worthy of a Land Cruiser.

Motor Authority Newsletter

The plug-in hybrid Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe Trailhawk costs at least $68,000, which is astonishing. The 2025 Toyota 4Runner sits waiting in the wings arriving this fall with Trailhunter and TRD Pro models that sport the same powertrain and nearly the same off-road hardware as the Land Cruiser. But a review like this wouldn’t be complete without a test that dispensed with the off-road driver aids. You just can’t beat fresh air and the steady sound of an engine building as you climb over obstacles. Even without the off-road assists, the Land Cruiser easily negotiated the trail and made me feel more talented than I actually am. The high-speed trail could be driven in either 4Hi or 4Lo for greater traction but even with all the steep hills, 4Lo was hardly necessary.

This will result in all three Land Cruiser series again being available in Japan. The 70 series is also still being marketed in the Middle East as a 2-door and 4-door version as an SUV, and a 2-door and 4-door version as a pickup, and it is very popular there along with the regular Land Cruiser. The 70 series is also still marketed in Australia as 4-door wagon, 2-door 'Troop Carrier', 2-door cab-chassis and 4-door cab-chassis.

As a reliable and practical choice for customers, it has improved ease of handling and comfort for on-road driving as well. Every 2024 Land Cruiser gets a full-time four-wheel-drive system, which effectively equates to all-wheel drive with a low-range selected by pushing a thick toggle on the center console down and back toward 4WD Low. Next to that are buttons for the electronically locking center and rear differentials, and the stabilizer bar. A multi-purpose knob wheels through on-road drive modes and, if so equipped, the Multi-Terrain Select options.

Toyota Land Cruiser First Drive Review: Brief taste shows promise, but 1958 questionable

The two versions look very similar, but there are significant differences under the bodywork. Despite these differences and official model names, both the 100 and 105 are collectively known as the 100 series. It takes seconds going down the road on pavement to understand the Land Cruiser’s place in the Bronco/Wrangler conversation.

Featured Makes

The one-year-only First Edition (pictured below in beige) combines the round headlights with the rest of the upgrade Land Cruiser fascia. Judging by internet response and my fellow attendees at the press launch, the retro round headlights are greatly preferred. Based on some whispers, nudges and winks at the first drive event, don’t be surprised if demand results in a headlight option of some sort once the First Edition is sunset. The 100 series remained in production until late 2007, with several minor facelifts such as headlights, taillights, front grille, rear spoiler and specification changes introduced over the years. The Land Cruiser feels, and looks, as if it’s gone back to its roots while adopting a modern powertrain and electronics.

The new Land Cruiser still handles like a body-on-frame behemoth, which is to be expected given that it rides on the TNGA-F global truck platform. This is the same one that underpins the Tundra, Sequoia, Tacoma, Land Cruiser 300, and the upcoming 4Runner. So, even though this new Cruiser is “just” a Prado, it shares much with the full-size Land Cruiser sold overseas.

Land Cruiser shown in Heritage Blue with Grayscape roof with available Premium Package and 20-in.

Known as the 200 Series, it shares the Lexus LX 570's platform and overall design. The frame was new, derived from the second-generation Tundra[citation needed] but shortened and strengthened by 20 percent. Bigger brake rotors and calipers were added and the front suspension was strengthened. The roof pillars were redesigned to better protect occupants in a rollover. When I hit the pavement, the turbo whoosh could be heard every time I let up from the throttle. Though I matted the accelerator pedal, acceleration on the road felt underwhelming.

The 100 series formed the basis for the Lexus LX 470, which was also sold in Japan as the Toyota Cygnus. The Sixth and Seventh generations of the Land Cruiser are still being produced and sold in African and Latin American regions. When you close the door on the Land Cruiser, any of them, there’s a hollow tinny sound that inspires no confidence or strength. Toyota has scaled back the Land Cruiser’s extravagant off-road hardware—again, so Lexus can thrive.

Additionally, Toyota pursued operational comfort by positioning switches that can be intuitively operated according to function, and using shape and color designs that improve operability. The 250 Series achieves good forward visibility through a low-set cowl and instrument panel top surface, which contribute to safe on- and off-road driving. It also employs a low beltline to improve visibility of road surfaces even on rough roads. While dramatically improving off-road driving performance on the traditional Land Cruiser wheelbase, this series has a shorter mirror-to-mirror width to ensure good maneuverability. With the same GA-F platform as the 300 Series, the new 250 Series has dramatically improved off-road performance.

Full-time four-wheel drive with a 2-speed electronically controlled transfer case comes standard on the new Land Cruiser, as do center and rear locking differentials. The Land Cruiser First Edition starts at $76,345 including destination, which is almost $20,000 over the price of a base model. Despite the dramatic difference in cost, 1958 and First Edition models share the same basic looks, both getting circular headlights inspired by old Cruisers. The middle trim has rectangular LED headlights that nod to the 60 series, specifically the FJ62. You could say the 1958 is more retro, but two-tone paint is only available on upper trims and the white roof is a Land Cruiser staple. In terms of space, I’m 6-foot-3, and had no problem getting comfortable up front with either the 1958’s manual seats or the other trims’ power ones.

Review: 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser pivots to retro charm

Body roll isn’t excessive, steering is precise with appropriate weighting (if there’s some added in Sport mode, I didn’t really notice), and the well-sorted damping didn’t have the body bounding about in mid-corner bumps. There are the telltale wiggles and jiggles over bumps, and much like the mechanically related Sequoia, I would suspect that the available 20-inch wheels may amplify that sensation. The introduction of a V8 engine was also a first for a Land Cruiser, and was specifically intended to improve sales in the North-American market, where it was the only engine available. In Australia, the 100 V8 was initially only available in the range-topping GXV model, while entry and mid-range models were the 105 powered by the 1FZ-FE I6 petrol, or 1HZ diesel engines. The new 1HD-FTE turbo-diesel 100 was added to the Australian range in October 2000 after being available in Europe and the UK since the vehicle's launch in 1998.

However, in a separate development, in 1941, the Japanese government asked Toyota to develop a light truck for the military. And after the Empire of Japan occupied the Philippines, during 1941–1942, a captured Bantam GP (or Willys MB) was sent to Japan for assessment and testing. Japanese military authorities subsequently requested that Toyota produce a similar vehicle, albeit with an altered external appearance. Toyota’s Multi-Terrain Select system features off-road modes for various situations and like other modern vehicles can now be used in both 4Hi and 4Lo. The crawl control system, which works like off-road cruise control, is much more refined than Toyota’s previous system, which made loud clunks and thunks. An electronically controlled disconnecting sway bar up front that extends wheel travel is standard on the mid-trim Land Cruiser and First Edition grades, but it can not be optioned on the base 1958 trim.

Land Cruiser’s available Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) helps you navigate varying landscapes with improved traction at different speeds. Crawl Control (CRAWL) helps take on difficult terrain by automatically modulating the throttle and brakes, so you can focus on steering. And the Land Cruiser development process reminded us, that in many parts of the world, individual mobility is not a luxury but a lifeline.

Those also get a 12.3-inch touchscreen, though it effectively runs the same interface. The upper trims also get padded door and dash surfaces (and armrests) covered in SofTex simulated leather, resulting in a cabin that looks and feels the part of something costing more than $60,000. The design is also less severe and, well, Tacoma-like than the new 4Runner’s, providing an altogether stronger answer for “Why Land Cruiser instead of 4Runner? The J300 series Land Cruiser was unveiled on 9 June 2021.[81] Its development was led by Toyota chief engineer Takami Yokoo.[85] Built on the body-on-frame GA-F platform, the frame itself was redesigned to reduce weight and increase rigidity. The total weight of the vehicle was reduced by 200 kg (441 lb) compared to its predecessor. Other improvements claimed include lowered center of gravity, weight distribution, and an improved suspension structure.

At 5-foot-10 I could comfortably sit behind myself, but there’s a stadium seating layout so the rear passengers are looking up and over those in the front seat. The seating position feels high and translates to barely enough headroom for 6-footers in back despite the scalloped headliner. There’s no third row in the U.S., but other markets do get a third row. Toyota didn’t bother redesigning the rear cargo area, so there are armrests and cup holders back there as if a third row exists.

The table below identifies the range of 100 and 105 models and their worldwide availability. The 105 carried over the majority of its chassis and powertrain from the 80-series with coil suspended solid axles front and rear, and straight-6 petrol and diesel engines. These models were only sold in African, Australian, Russian, and South American markets. Since 1990, the smaller variation of the Land Cruiser has been marketed as the Land Cruiser Prado. Described as a 'light-duty' version of the Land Cruiser by Toyota, it features a different design compared to the full-size model and, up until 2023, it remains the only comfort-oriented Land Cruiser available with a short-wheelbase 3-door version. Off-road the Land Cruiser didn’t break a sweat on the rather tame rock-strewn and undulating terrain.

The liftover height is too high because the load floor is raised to accommodate the hybrid powertrain’s battery pack under the rear floor. To ensure the load floor was flat a plastic compartment under a false floor is installed near the tailgate as a cheat like GM did with the previous generation Tahoe and Yukons. The new 250 Series is a core Land Cruiser model with the same GA-F platform as the 300 Series to dramatically improve basic performance as an off-roader. It also comes with various powertrains to achieve even more powerful driving performance and environmental performance worthy of the Land Cruiser name. It was created in pursuit of unique Land Cruiser characteristics, incorporating interior and exterior styling that fuses traditional and modern in a functional package. The aim was to create a next-generation Land Cruiser with improved ease of handling and comfort for both on- and off-road driving, while also delivering class-leading advanced safety performance.

The controls will be familiar to anyone that’s been in a recent Toyota with lots of buttons and knobs, including for the climate control and volume control. An 8.0-inch touchscreen is standard along with a 7.0-inch digital gauge cluster on 1958 models. The mid-trim Land Cruiser and First Edition models sport a larger 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and 12.3-inch touchscreen with the familiar Toyota interface. That interface can’t split screen—hope you like a lot of CarPlay and or a huge map—and on the smaller 8.0-inch screen everything feels compressed. This is because Toyota’s interface locks some native touch commands on the left rail, making the usable screen smaller. With 8.7 inches of ground clearance the course we were on didn’t present many obstacles the Land Cruiser couldn’t clear easily, but all Land Cruisers come standard with skid plates for the engine, transmission and transfer case.

Engage Land Cruiser’s electronically locking differentials with the press of a button to distribute engine power for better traction while maneuvering through challenging terrain. Land Cruiser's new powertrain combines hybrid tech with an impressive turbo 4-cylinder hybrid engine to generate an electrifying 326 net combined horsepower with 465 lb.-ft. You'll also find more confidence to cover even more ground with its EPA-estimated 23 combined mpg rating.

The hardware seems far more capable than we were allowed to experience during our brief first encounter. The turbo-4 gets augmented by the instant power delivery from the electric motor at take off. Toyota’s perfected hybrid powertrain blending and the story’s the same here with smooth transitions and delivery while clambing over obstacles or up hills at low speeds.

But it carries an all too modern price and dips in its core-mission abilities. The outgoing Land Cruiser posted abysmal EPA fuel economy ratings of 13 mpg city, 17 highway, 14 combined. The 2024 Land Cruiser’s hybrid powertrain on paper is much more efficient with ratings of 22 mpg city, 25 highway, and 23 combined.

Toyota refused to disclose whether these are all sold out already, so it’s possible that you could get your hands on one but it won’t come cheap. Make no mistake; the Land Cruiser we’re getting is smaller, but it’s not small by any means. It’s officially a mid-size SUV, sitting below the Toyota Sequoia in terms of size and price. It’ll technically sit above the new 4Runner among Toyota’s stable despite both being classed as mid-size SUVs. The difference between the upcoming 4Runner and this Land Cruiser—besides price—will remain in their styling, comfort, and overall aims as vehicles.
